Door County Child Development Center: Supporting Education Through Innovation

August 21, 2025

In response to the ongoing childcare demand in Door County, the recently inaugurated Door County Child Development Center (DCCDC) has presented itself as a solution.

Quantum Technologies has played a pivotal role in transforming DCCDC into a secure, technologically advanced facility. The implementation of door access control, mobile SMART boards, and various technology systems reflects Quantum's commitment to providing tailored solutions that enhance safety, communication, and the overall learning experience for children.

"This new facility allows us to branch out our services and reach more people, " says Alexis Fuller, Executive Director and co-founder of DCCDC. "The addition of the Head Start and Early Head Start programs, as well as many new adaptive features will ensure that all have equal opportunities for a quality, nurturing, early childhood enrichment program and facility. "

Strategic Planning

With technology continually advancing, investing in upgrades becomes imperative, particularly in educational settings. During new construction, there is a unique opportunity to review existing practices and opt for newer, more feature-rich solutions.

"At Quantum we like to have in-depth conversations early in the process to understand how the customer wants to utilize a space for each system that will be installed. That way the customer gets an accurate estimate for budgeting, and they get the solution that does what they need, " explains Quantum Technologies Project Manager Tony Stahl. "Before pulling the first cable in the building, we worked with Alexis for over 6 months as we discussed, engineered, reviewed, adjusted, planned, and tweaked the designs. All that work made the project go smoothly. "

"From the start, Quantum Technologies stood out as the obvious choice for our needs, " adds Fuller. Engaging them through Keller, who managed the project, was a smooth process. Contacting Erin, Nate, or Tony is straightforward, and their responses are consistently positive: "Yes, we can do this, or let's find a solution. " Beyond routine computer maintenance, Quantum tackled the complex task of providing Wi-Fi coverage throughout the facility, including the playground.

Ensuring Child Safety and Security

"It's honestly hard to think about a daycare needing security, " shares Sturgeon Bay resident Patrick Schmelzer, whose 3-year-old child attends the new daycare facility. "I do think our community is safe, but it feels comforting to know that the building is so secure. "

The Building Security System implemented by Quantum Technologies encompasses the electronic control of 18 doors through key fobs, along with the installation of 35 cameras providing comprehensive coverage of both the interior and exterior of the facility.

By implementing door access systems, Quantum provided a multi-faceted solution:

  • The door access systems ensure that only authorized individuals, such as parents, guardians, or approved staff members, have access to the daycare
  • Preventing Unauthorized Access: Daycares often have specific areas designated for different age groups or purposes. Door access controls restrict entry, preventing unauthorized individuals from entering areas where they should not be, thus enhancing overall security.
  • Preventing Elopement: Especially crucial for very young children or those with special needs, door access controls prevent children from wandering off or leaving the premises without proper supervision.
  • Parental Peace of Mind: Knowing that security measures are in place provides parents with peace of mind, contributing to the overall perception of a secure and well-managed childcare environment.

Full Spectrum Tech

In each classroom, there is an integrated iPad that connects to the parent communication app, facilitating ongoing conversations and updates about each child's day. This innovative system extends to the lighting setup as well. "For instance, during naptime, if a teacher can't reach the light switch for any reason, they have the iPad on hand. With a real-time overview of the child's day, the teacher can make lighting adjustments remotely, " explains Fuller. This added layer of convenience ensures staff members can maintain their focus, whether they have a child on their lap or are momentarily occupied.

Quantum's involvement also includes the installation and maintenance of:

  • IT Network: Over 125 Cat6 data drops, firewall, switches, and 14 wireless access points.
  • AV Systems: Full conference room solution for board and staff meetings, multi-purpose room with wireless microphones, Bluetooth connections, and a portable SMART Board with presentation and conferencing capabilities.
  • Phone System: 25 phones for offices and classrooms, supporting calls, announcements, and internal communication.

Quantum provides ongoing computer support through their Quantum Care service, ensuring a seamless transition from the old DCCDC building to the new one.

Last, the integration of a mobile SMART board with conferencing capabilities has brought a modern addition to DCCDC, offering a range of benefits to enhance both the learning experience and administrative efficiency:

  • Interactive Teaching & Classroom Adaptability: fosters dynamic and interactive lessons, enhancing student engagement with multimedia elements and collaborative activities; allows teachers to easily adjust the classroom layout for different teaching styles.
  • Professional Development: Conferencing features facilitate virtual participation of experts, guest speakers, and educators, enriching the learning experience and providing professional development opportunities.
  • Cost-Efficiency and Accessibility: conferencing capabilities reduce travel needs, resulting in cost savings and expanded access to resources, enhancing administrative communication and fostering inclusivity for students with diverse learning styles and abilities.

Shared Values for Community Growth

With a history of collaboration at the original DCCDC location, the relationship between the organization and Quantum Technologies has deepened. "It's more than just installs and maintenance for us; they are out in the community supporting us. They give back just as much as we contract them out for, " says Fuller.

She explains, "Having business owners of the same generation, sharing similar goals, and being open to experimentation is incredibly significant. I see a shared perspective. The commitment to finding improved approaches, being open to change, and taking action without hesitation—that's what it's about."

Quantum Technologies Vice-President Erin Helgeson adds, "At the core of our shared values is a commitment to caring for our employees. DCCDC's transition to a larger facility is appealing as an employer. The expansion attracts experienced job seekers, who often have families. We prioritize the right environment for our team, offering benefits and time off. And I know that's central to DCCDC's philosophy. Creating a relaxed and sustainable atmosphere is essential."

In emphasizing their roles in supporting Door County's next generation, Helgeson states, "Alexis and her team can concentrate on nurturing the children while we take care of maintaining their computers, recording devices, and access monitors. It's about leveraging our unique skills and resources to help grow the community."
